Volkan is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he works in the Caltech High-Speed Integrated Circuits (CHIC) Lab under the supervision of Professor Ali Hajimiri. His research focuses on the design and development of RF-to-photonic integrated circuits for wireless applications such as wireless communications, sensing, imaging, power transfer, and radio science. He has authored and co-authored 4 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, of three of which he is the first author, and presented 5 demos and poster presentations at various conferences.
Before joining Caltech, he graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. During his tenure at Georgia Tech, he conducted research in the Georgia Tech LF Radio Lab, GEMS Lab, Propagation Lab, and Plasma and Dielectrics Lab. He participated in the ECE Opportunity Research Scholars (ORS) program for three years and completed the UROP Research Option track by publishing his undergraduate thesis. At Georgia Tech, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of The Tower Undergraduate Research Journal, Georgia Tech's premier interdisciplinary research journal for undergraduates, Editor on the Board of Student Publications, Vice President of Campus Relations on Student Activities Board for Undergraduate Research and Treasurer of Georgia Tech Dance Association. He was also an undergraduate teaching assistant for Circuits, Measurements, and Microelectronics Laboratory (ECE 3043), a junior-level microelectronics course for undergraduate students.
He interned at Micron Technology, Inc. in Boise, ID during the summers of 2018 and 2019. During summer 2018, he worked as a DRAM Product Engineering Intern in the Data Analytics and Disposition Team, developing a statistical disposition software to categorize and scrap DRAM wafers and dies of varying quality based on their test data. During summer 2019, he worked as an High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) Product Engineering Intern in the HBM Product and R&D Team, designing and prototyping Micron's next-generation HBM DRAM 3D IC (HBMnext). At Micron during both summers, he was also a volunteer lead in Micron Foundation's K-12 STEM Outreach Programs, organizing the Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars Program and Micron Chip Camp.
He was a recipient of the R. David Middlebrook Fellowship, Tau Beta Pi Fellowship, Roger P. Webb ECE Undergraduate Research Award, IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate/Pre-Graduate Scholarship, Radio Club of America Scholarship, American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting Student Travel Grant, Eta Kappa Nu Innovation Scholarship, Georgia Tech President's Undergraduate Research Award (twice), and ORS Peer Review Award. He is a reviewer for the IEEE Transactions on Geosciences and Remote Sensing and is a member of the IEEE-HKN Electrical and Computer Engineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, and Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society.
