Biography
Volkan is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he works in the Caltech High-Speed Integrated Circuits (CHIC) Lab under the supervision of Professor Ali Hajimiri. His research focuses on large-scale photonic integrated circuits for classical and quantum information processing with applications in sensing, ranging, communications, machine learning, and quantum information technologies.
Before joining Caltech, he graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. During his tenure at Georgia Tech, he conducted research in the Georgia Tech LF Radio Lab, GEMS Lab, Propagation Lab, and Plasma and Dielectrics Lab. He participated in the ECE Opportunity Research Scholars (ORS) program for three years and completed the UROP Research Option track by publishing his undergraduate thesis.
He was a recipient of the R. David Middlebrook Fellowship, Tau Beta Pi Fellowship, Roger P. Webb ECE Undergraduate Research Award, IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate/Pre-Graduate Scholarship, Radio Club of America Scholarship, American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting Student Travel Grant, Eta Kappa Nu Innovation Scholarship, Georgia Tech President's Undergraduate Research Award (2x), and ORS Peer Review Award. He has been a reviewer for the IEEE Transactions on Geosciences and Remote Sensing and is a member of the IEEE-HKN Electrical and Computer Engineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, and Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society.
